· Increase efficiency of food providers in Peel
· Strengthen the current food distribution system
· Develop effective strategies and connecting to other support services
· Raise awareness of food security issues
· Standardization of how we collect data
· Work towards achieving recommendations outlined in the Hand that Feeds report.
Peel Hunger Relief Network
Establishment in May 2018, stakeholders from the Emergency Food Distribution sector came together to discuss the 2016 report The Hand That Feeds, An Assessment of the Emergency Food Distribution System in Peel Region. Through a series of meetings and activities, stakeholders prioritized the recommendations in the report:
1) Develop a Peel Food Network.
2) Map the Food System.
3) Encourage community hub models that provide social and food services.
4) Adopt a “grocery store model” and
5) Develop and pilot a social purpose enterprise as a result, the Peel Hunger Relief Network was formed to move forward the priority recommendations and common goals of the sector. 2019-2020 Successes
· Peel Food Map Refresh (Feb 2020) The Peel Food Map Subcommittee worked diligently to ensure the interactive map is up-to-date and accurate for agency and resident use.
· Peel Food Map – COVID-19 Response Tool The Peel Food Map Subcommittee and Region of Peel keeps the map up-to-date and accurate throughout the COVD-19 pandemic, regularly updating changes in operational hours and services available.
· Monthly Newsletter The Communications Subcommittee maintains a monthly newsletter with updates related to the COVID-19 response and other Food Distribution information and resources to keep subscribers in the know.
· Support to the Community Response Table Members from the PHRN participate and support the Community Response Table initiatives and actions to address food-related needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
