Advocacy to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for Federal Emergency Funding for Foodbanks

Regional Council passed a resolution approving that the Federation of Canadian Municipalities be requested, through resolution at its upcoming Board Meeting and Annual General Meeting, to advocate to the federal government to help address the food insecurity crisis by providing emergency funding to foodbanks.

The Region of Peel has declared food insecurity a crisis and has agreed to include an additional $2 million in funding for food banks across the region in the 2024 budget from the Community Investment Program.

National School Food Program

Regional Council passed a resolution approving that Peel Region call on the federal government to establish a National School Food Program and dedicate appropriate funding in Budget 2024 to allocate to municipalities, provinces, and territories across Canada to implement a program this year; that the Regional Chair, on behalf of Regional Council, write to the federal Minister of Health in support of establishment of a universal national school nutrition program; and, that this request be included as a priority in Peel Region’s submission into the federal 2024 pre-budget consultation process.
